I share my story because I want to bust abortion stigma and for people to feel less alone navigating such a common experience.

How I honor my abortion: I honor my abortion by living my truth every single day.

What I wish people knew about abortion: I wish more people knew that having an abortion can be just as easy of a decision as it can be a hard one, and that’s ok!

What is your favorite abortion on TV? My favorite depiction of abortion on TV was Christina Yang’s abortion in Grey’s Anatomy because she navigates barriers and stigma and condemnation from her partner and still felt confident that she made the best decision for herself.

5 People Share Why Their Abortion Was Beautiful

For some, beautiful probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind when thinking about the process of getting an abortion, especially in states hostile to it. In fact, navigating the plethora of anti-choice restrictions across the United States can seem anything but beautiful; it can feel terribly overwhelming and invasive, particularly for low-income people, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, and young people under 18 who have to go through the process of a judicial bypass.

The Harassment We Face as Abortion Storytellers

After navigating various political obstacles to access abortion in the first place, the decision to share our stories should be our choice, on our terms, and when we feel ready. While abortion storytelling can be an empowering experience, if it leads to harassment, including death threats and sexual harassment, like the study found—even when the storyteller uses a pseudonym or alias—then there is clearly always risk involved.

5 People on How They Learned Their Parents Had Experience With Abortion

As children, we share countless stories with our parents, from magical ones born from our young imaginations to stories of painful breakups, horrible bosses, and fantastic first dates when we’re adults. We also share stories of our abortions. Like me, the following people shared their abortion story and had it met by another. Abortion is normal, and for many of us, abortion is just one of the many things we have in common with our parents.
